Dr. Octopus was dropped from the first film because Raimi had so many people to introduce. Several SFX shots were already done to show they can do the Doc without problem.

Robin Williams was in the running for the role then, and it currently the front runner for the sequel.

It would be great if the black costume were introduced in the second film and then discarded so that VENOM could appear in the third and final Spiderman feature.

Wasn't DocOck a big guy? I think the Rock would be a better candidate for that role... or maybe Hulk Hogan (the pun was too good to resist).

Whaddaya mean FINAL ???

We have lots more villians to do. I wanna see Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin...

On 31 May 2002, Dwayne Conyers appeared before the congregation in 'alt.comics.spider-man' assembled, and proclaimed:

Not really. He was a rather beefed up scientist, but he was always a scientist. I'd love to see what Robin Williams could do for a Doc Ock accent.

OOOH! Oh yeah. I bet it'd give new meaning if he grabs some other dude in the crotch. I doubt it'd be for healing purposes this time.

it wouldnt be bad to have Venom in there as a side story though if there were a more prominent villian int he film as well-i really like Venom-so I'm a little biased-but you're right-a whole movie with just him as villain wouldnt be very good....

On 04 Jun 2002, tperfect appeared before the congregation in 'alt.comics.spider-man' assembled, and proclaimed:

The only way I might buy Venom as a bad guy is if they actually do a 'Secret Wars' movie and Spidey gets the symbiote off-world. And since we know they're not going to do that, I hope that means they won't use Venom.

I always found him more pathetic than menacing...kind of like if Woody Allen beat Jack Nicholson for the role of the Joker.

Venom is an accident and an afterthought - the product of Marvel's attempt to change Spidey's costume and of the aftermath of how they chose to address the general public dislike for Spidey in black.

[re: Venom]

I don't like the character at all but I do see him as menacing, mostly because of his instability and his general lack of conscience. Why don't I like him? Maybe because of that tongue thing he's got. It's almost lewd.

Well in an interview in the UK yesterday the crew said not to expect many deleted scenes on the DVD (just out in time for xmas worldwide they say) because some of it they want to use in the sequel. So that would well mean they don't want people seeing the scenes of Dr Octopus because he'll be in the sequel.

Those SFX shots were just technology demos to show they could do it, not scenes intended for the movie. The deleted scenes thing, the original excuse was, 'there aren't any, Sam used them all'. Guess they realized no one was going to buy that and now they say they are for future use. Still, I'd bet on at least a FEW deleted scenes anyway, it's almost standard for DVD releases now.
