Hi Guys

I don't know if this is a topic that has been discussed here previously, but I'm new here and wanted to know what do you think about the approach they take on the movie about Spidey's web shooters.

Is really a good Idea to have biological web shooters or they should have gone with the mechanical ones? What impact may it have on the story/character/fans?

Hope this also help a bit opening new discussion topics...

I think, at this time it's a good idea to make something new. Back in the sixties, when Spidey was created, it had done him no good, to have biological web shooters, because it had stamped him as freak. But today the world is right for something like that. The only setback of it is, that the web is not a creation of Peter's science-skills. But he makes the web-shooters. Back in the sixties he had made the web-formula after the analyses of real spider-web. Maybe it's the same with his own web now?

As far as I know, there's no information around regarding the web fluid, I mean, if it is actually created by a new organ on Peter's arms, or if he studied his secretion (YUCK!, that sounds disgusting!). There has been a real hype around the subject. Hard core fans believe they should have stayed with the mechanical shooters. The arguments range from staying true to the story, to the more interesting ones saying that it's not 'realistic' to think that Peter develops organs that can sintesize and shoot under pressure a web fluid. Other think that it's more 'realistic' the approach of the bio-web shooters. Even the director Sam Raimi had say that 'it's difficult to believe that P.P. came up with a substance that not even 3-M is aware of'

I think it would have been nice if they stay true to the original story. Plus... Is there anything realistic about Spider-man? I mean, If I want to see some reality, I'd probably stay home watching CNN, right?

Is there anyone familiar with the scriptlet that James Cameron wrote a few years ago to do the Movie, when the idea first came into discussion? I think he also used biologicals, his argument if I'm not wrong stated that he wanted to show the alienation that Peter felt... Even more when he became the 'freak' that could crawl the walls. I don't think there's any need to stress that subject anymore, using the biologicals... Just being able to 'hear' what Peter thinks, would have been more than enough to show this, and bring him closer to the audience, as the comics and Animated Series Show.

Don't you think?

How Peter would shoot the webbing if it is strictly organic produced and released is the problem.

My thought on how this could be justified in the movie (or if needed retroed into the comic) would be to have if be an amalgam of both.

The fluid is produced organically but for Peter to be able to 'shoot' it a mechanical device is required.

So Peter is producing this fluid which is stored in pressurized web cartridges which can be used as required.

Thoughts anyone?

Well, one approach is to think that the organ would actually shoot the fluid when put under pressure (that is, when Peter pushes with his fingers on his palm). However, one argument is how far whould this go. My thought is that it wouldn't go much more than a few meters, at most 15. Another argument is that he would shoot whenever he makes some pressure on his wrist, making it impossible for him to have a normal life, shaking hands and almost do anything a normal person would do.

Anyone else?

Ok. I'm willing to withhold judgement on the organic webbing until I see the movie. In fact, one of the big problems with a pressurized cylinder of fluid involves accidental puncture. There is apparently a whole bunch of fluid under extreme pressure in one of those little cartridges. If one of those cylinders were accidentally broken... BOOM ...instant coccoon, Spider-man suffocates(assuming he survives the blast). I don't think even spider strength would be enough to get him loose in time. At the very least the blast would probably take off his arm.

The advantage of the organic origin would eliminate this problem. Of course there is still the problem of shooting it any distance. That would still require some type of propulsion system. There aren't many kinds of spiders with the ability to 'shoot' webbing. I'll assume that when that particular spider was genetically altered it passed along a new ability(that it never had). As for control, Peter can control his ability to climb walls, he should also be able to control his production of web fluid. A hand shake causing webs to shoot would be about as likely as the hands getting stuck together.

What do you think?

I think this makes a sound theory. Why they just simply couldn't stick with the original way I don't know. I mean, what was the advantage or goal in changing it to organic?

Aparently, they wanted to avoid the subject of Peter being a science geek. They thought it was a lot more realistic to have him produce his web fluid instead of having 'develop' it from scratch. Also, they thought that being Parker and orphan, and living with his uncle and aunt, he wouldn't possibly have the money to buy the equipment to build the mechanical shooters, or to store the web fluid on pressurized cartridges. Aparently it was a problem of justify on screen time how he develops the mechanical stuff. Also, there's the point on alienation. Having develop a new 'organ', Peter would feel himself more distant to his friends (which needless to say, already thought of Peter as a nerd, a no one).

I would like to share with all of you an article which describes a bit what other fans have thought about changing the web shooter to organics... I personally agree with most of the statements on this article, and I'm pretty sure that many other fans will as well. Here you go:
http://www.spidermanhype.com/editorials/webshooters/ part1.htm

However, I want to clarify that organic web shooters were the approach of James Cameron's script and as for now, there's no evidence whatsoever that the same approach will be used on Sam Raimi's movie. I'm just trying to speculate a bit, and read your opinions on the subject.

Actually there is on thing that confuses me: If there are really web-glands at peters wrists, how will he manage to conceal them? Thats not good for his double-identity.

150% Agree with you.

Someone said that he would probably have to use a wrist watch, or long sleeves all the time (most unlikely).

I still think mechs are the best way out. Plus, it stays true to the original story.
