Oh no...not a romance subplot!! Not like say...the ENTIRE legend of Spider-Man since practically Day One?? What were they thinking, making the movie true to the character??

I wouldn't say any of this necessarily makes it a 'Chick Flick.'
Girls were crying when I originally saw ET, but that wasn't a 'Chick Flick.'
'Raiders of the Lost Ark' had a buff, shirtless Harrison Ford, a feisty girl, and a cheezy romance, but it wasn't a 'Chick Flick.'
Methinks you don't know what a 'Chick Flick' is.

I'm sure there must have been a few guys get choked up when Uncle Ben is killed after Peter had been such an ass to him.

Surprisingly, Time Magazine seems to agree with you - or at least they think the combination of action and angst is self-conflicting. But I don't. Even comic books have been mixing action and angst since... 1962 when Spider-Man first came out.
By extension, 'swallow the bait whole' = 'respond to every newsgroup'. I've trimmed the wrestling NG, thanks.

so in other words, they shouldn't have tried so much to relate it to the actual origin of spider-man that was written back in 1962?.... time ta call Tim Burton in

what if it has guys crying in the audience? what does that make it?
what's wrong with people having an emotional reaction to a film? personally, if a simple popcorn action film can get someone to have an emotional reaction, I'd say that's rare AND a good thing! It shows that the makers of the film wanted to get more of a reaction from their audience than just selling Dr.Pepper.
if you didn't like the film, that's one thing. but to solely not like it cuz it made girls cry, that's pretty lame on your part.

Dude, don't bring Dr Pepper into this. He didn't do anything wrong.
Saw the movie again last night, and I still enjoyed it. In fact I enjoyed it better than I thought I would. After I saw it the first time I liked it, but on further thought I thought of all the things they could have done better. Seeing it the 2nd time I just enjoyed the ride and noticed everything they did right. It was just the first movie and the guy was just out of high school, of course it isn't perfect, it isn't *supposed* to be. If they handle it right the sequel might be even better.
They call me Túrin. You should too.
